We back operators who would have built their businesses even if we had not written the cheque — and then we help them build something they could not have built alone.
George D. Crowley, Jr. is an American entrepreneur and investor whose career spans more than four decades of technology and infrastructure development. He founded The Crowley Group in Washington, D.C. in 1983, at the moment when the AT&T divestiture was reshaping American telecommunications — and when the first generation of cellular spectrum licenses was available to those with the foresight to pursue them.
An attorney by training, Mr. Crowley holds degrees from Georgetown University and the Georgetown University Law Center. Over the course of his career he has co-arranged approximately $4.5 billion in financing alongside The Blackstone Group, AT&T Wireless, SAIC, and Lucent Technologies. His most consequential transaction, the build-out and sale of Salmon PCS to AT&T Wireless, returned approximately 48 times invested capital — a landmark in American wireless infrastructure investment.
Crowley Cellular, the firm's founding venture, was capitalised at $5,000 in 1983 and grew to become the second-largest privately held wireless telephone company in the United States by 1990 — an outcome that remains one of the landmark returns in the history of American wireless infrastructure.
Mr. Crowley has served on the Georgetown University Board of Regents and the Executive Committee of the National Symphony Orchestra. His daughter, Dr. Elizabeth Lindsey Crowley, serves on the firm's board and leads its global relations function.
